The National Women in Blues Festival was created to level the playing field for women blues artists. If you go to most blues festivals you will be hard pressed to find many women fronted acts playing the main stage. In fact you often have to search the line up, yet the charts are full of incredible and talented women in blues (they cross the charts more than men out of need).

From legends like Etta James and Koko Taylor, to modern day blues women like Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi and Shemekia Copeland, to those who have passed like Memphis Minnie and Janice Joplin. Women in blues have helped keep the genre alive and well.

Factoid: The first blues tune ever recorded was done by a Woman! Go ahead and google it...the truth will set you free!!

There will be plenty of men playing at our event in support of the female blues artists of the day. But like our Sister events around the states and now forming over seas, we are here to give the women in blues a main stage. The WiB, where women are more than a side note.

ADDED THIS YEAR FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER is the Saturday Invitational Jam (Free, and Open to the Public) at The Cellar, 35 N. Front St. JAM Time Noon to 5pm. Hosted by Michele and Midnight Blues who represented the Cape Fear Blues Society in the 2006 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Expect a few surprise at the jam and some special guest performers too! Check the web site often for up dates and additions!

This year's event will be held in two places: Fri. night will take place at beautiful, newly revamped, Greenfield Lake Amphitheater, corner of West Lake Shore Dr. & Honeysuckle St., Wilmington, North Carolina, and Sat. at one of the areas newest clubs The Cellar, 35 N. Front St.,  next to the Cape Fear River in historic downtown Wilmington, North Carolina.

We also have an added component! WFOS has offered to come here and BROADCAST the show LIVE via cell phones!

BE A PATRON SAINT OF THE ARTS!

The National Women in Blues Festival does more than just bring women artists together from the blues genre but it also supports the Blues Women's Urgent Medical Fund!  The Blues Woman's Urgent Medical Fund is for blues women over 65 years of age, and is currently being set up and we will make that information available soon.  Statistics show that woman are under insured, and woman in the arts even more so. Our fund may be able to preserve the dignity of those who came before us. It will be an emergency fund to help with costs due to injury or illness to female blues artists.   The details are being hammered out now and will be posted by spring. We will take donations to be directed to this fund when all of the accounts are in place and not a moment before.

We will post guidelines for submitting for help after the 2nd WiB Festival. It will serve to help with small financial needs until the fund grows large enough to do more. We have been advised to offer assistance with some prescriptions costs or covering some utility bills or even some extra money for groceries.

We HOPE to grow the fund large enough to help with big medical emergencies in the future. Please check back after this years festival to see how to apply for assistance.
